How Much RAM WordPress Needs: 262 MiB. The Machine Needs 753 MiB.

13 October 202630 August 2026 by StackValue Editorial
Bar chart of the same php-fpm container measured two ways on 30 August 2026: ps aux summed RSS at 191.4 MB as recorded, and docker stats at 97.34 MiB, a cache-adjusted figure rather than the raw cgroup total, about 1.9 to 2 times apart

On our 2 GB VPS the WordPress stack uses 262 MiB and the whole machine uses 753 MiB, measured on one low-traffic instance. Summed per-process RSS read about 1.9-2x the container’s own figure, most likely because RSS counts shared pages once per worker.
