Short answer: The WH-1000XM6 guide describes three different numbers. The headset "can be paired with up to 8 devices." With [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously] turned on in the Sony | Sound Connect app, it can hold Bluetooth connections to 2 devices at once. And it "can only play music from 1 paired device at a time." A saved pairing is not an active connection, and two connections are not two music streams.
Scope: Sony’s WH-1000XM6 Help Guide, two pages ("Connecting the headset to 2 devices simultaneously (multipoint connection)" and "Pairing and connecting with a computer (Windows 11)"), checked October 10, 2026 (11:40 KST). This is a reading of Sony’s guide, not our test. We haven’t bought, paired or listened to this headset, and nothing here applies to other Sony models.
Three limits, three different questions
| Label | Documented limit | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Paired registrations | Up to 8. Pairing a 9th device overwrites the paired device "with the oldest connection date" | That 8 devices are connected or usable at once |
| Simultaneous Bluetooth links | 2, when [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously] is turned on in the app | That switching is instant, or that your exact devices work together |
| Music source | 1 paired device at a time | That audio from two devices is mixed |
Sony defines pairing as "the operation to register the device that you wish to connect to." The 8 and the 2 count different things.
What happens when a third device connects
Say A, B and C are all paired. A and B are connected, and A last played music. If you connect C, Sony says "the Bluetooth connection with the last device that played music will be maintained, and the Bluetooth connection with the other device will be disconnected." So the headset keeps A, drops B and adds C.
Playback follows the same idea. When you start music from the headset, "the music is played from the device that played last." If B starts playback while A is playing, B’s music is what you hear. Having B saved in the pairing list doesn’t reserve it a slot.

Setup order and the caveats
Sony’s sequence: pair the headset with both devices, connect the device that has the Sony | Sound Connect app, turn on [Connect to 2 devices simultaneously], then connect the second device.
For a Windows 11 computer, Sony lists prerequisites: Bluetooth that "supports music playback connections ( A2DP )", and for video calling apps, support for "calling connections ( HFP / HSP )", the computer within 1 m (3.2 ft), and a sufficiently charged headset. Sony calls the steps "an example" and points to the computer’s own instructions. Whether your exact computer and app combination works is not something the guide answers.
Calls are a separate case from music. With 2 smartphones connected, "both devices will be in standby mode." If a second call arrives, you can answer or reject it from the headset, "but you cannot end the first call"; ending it means operating the connected device.
If the connected device switches at an unintended time, Sony says you "may be able to prevent" it by turning off the phone’s notification and operation sound or lowering the volume. That is a suggestion, not a guaranteed fix.
FAQ
Can I keep three devices actively connected? The guide describes 2 simultaneous connections. A third connection drops one of the two, as in the A/B/C example.
Does eight pairings mean eight streams? No. Eight is the pairing list. Music plays from one paired device at a time.
What if the connected device switches when I don’t expect it? Sony’s note says turning off the phone’s notification and operation sound, or lowering the volume, may help prevent it. It doesn’t promise it will.
Will a Teams-on-laptop plus iPhone setup be reliable? UNKNOWN for your exact setup. The guide doesn’t name specific app and device combinations, and we haven’t tested one.
