PS5 Disc Drive Compatibility: Check Your Exact Model and the Internet Setup Before You Pay

Short answer: Buying the detachable PS5 disc drive? Check the model and the setup requirement separately. Sony’s US setup page and its US store listing describe the supported consoles in different terms, and neither one is a promise for every console sold as a "Digital Edition". Both say an internet connection is required to pair the drive and the PS5 console upon setup. So before you pay, find the exact CFI model number on your console and read the current product page for the market you are buying in.

Scope: based on four public PlayStation pages (US) checked October 9, 2026 (23:40 KST). None of them shows a publication date. We did not buy, attach or test a drive or a console. Nothing here is a statement about price, stock or a particular seller.

Your two-check worksheet

Fill this in for yourself before you pay. This site does not collect it, and you should not post your console’s serial number anywhere public.

CheckYour answerWhere to confirm
1. Exact model number on your console (starts with CFI)UNKNOWNBottom of the console when positioned vertically (remove the base if attached)
1b. Does the current product page for your market list that model group?UNKNOWNThe listing you are buying from
2. Will the console have an internet connection when you set up the drive?UNKNOWNYour own setup

Leave a row UNKNOWN until you have seen the answer yourself. A YES on row 2 does not make up for a NO on row 1b.

What each official page actually lists

The three pages below are all Sony’s own US pages, and they do not use the same wording. Each row is one page, quoted as it read on October 9, 2026.

PageModel scope it statesSetup pairing line
US setup support page"compatible only with PS5® consoles (CFI-2000/7000 model group)"Internet connection required
PlayStation Direct US listing"only for PS5® Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim & CFI-2100 model group – slim)"Internet connection required
playstation.com US accessories page"only for PS5 consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5®Pro consoles"Internet connection required

The scope difference matters. CFI-2100 appears on the store listing but not on the setup page or the accessories page; the setup page names a CFI-7000 group that the other two pages do not; and the listing and the accessories page name "PS5® Pro consoles" without a model number. No page says which model group a Pro is. We have not reconciled these lists, and a model missing from one page is not proof that the drive won’t work with it. Treat the table as three separate statements, not one compatibility chart, and check the page for your market and your exact model.

Find the model, not just the console nickname

"Digital Edition", "slim" or a product photo does not tell you the model group. Sony’s support page says the model number "consists of the letters CFI, followed by a series of numbers and a letter," and that it "is located on the bottom of the console when positioned vertically." If a base is attached, Sony says to remove the base to reveal it.

Don’t confuse this with the serial number. The same page shows how to find the serial number under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information; that path is for the serial number, not the model number. The full instructions are on Sony’s How to find PS5 console serial and model numbers page.

Pairing is a setup condition

All three pages carry the same line: an internet connection is required to pair the disc drive and the PS5 console upon setup. That is the whole claim. The pages do not say what happens without a connection after setup, after a reset or if you move the drive to another console, so this guide does not either.

Three short FAQs

Can the name "Digital Edition" alone settle the purchase? No. The listing and the accessories page use the name "Digital Edition" next to model groups (CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim on the PlayStation Direct listing), and the setup page names only model groups. Read the CFI model number on the console first.

Does a missing model on one page prove the drive won’t work? No. These pages differ in scope, and regional versions are outside what they say. Ask PlayStation Support before paying if your model is listed on one page but not another.

Does pairing mean every disc or game will work? No. The PlayStation Direct listing and the accessories page say the drive "will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs," and the listing speaks of "supported PS4® titles," but none of these pages is a game-by-game compatibility list.

Next step

Before you pay, read the model number on your console, open the current product listing (or the one for your market), and keep Sony’s setup page and model-number page open. If your model and the listing still don’t line up, ask PlayStation Support before you buy. Facts checked October 9, 2026 (23:40 KST); Sony can change these pages at any time. Nothing here is a test result, a price or stock claim, or a promise that the drive will work with your console.
