Apple Gift Card From Abroad: Three Checks Before You Pay

Short answer: A gift card can be valid and still be the wrong purchase. Apple’s US terms say that gift cards "purchased in the United States and content codes can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States." The same terms add that "Some Gift Cards may indicate they can only be used to purchase Products," and such a card cannot be used "to purchase Content" (in those terms, content, apps and services from Apple Media Services). So before you pay a seller abroad, check three things: the country the card was purchased in, what the card says it can buy, and the country of the Apple Account you will redeem it on.

Scope: this guide is based on four public Apple pages checked October 9, 2026 (11:20 KST): the US gift card terms (last updated October 14, 2024), the US Apple Gift Card page, Apple Support’s redeem page and its "Change your Apple Account country or region" page. The country rule quoted above is from the US terms; if your card was purchased elsewhere, read that country’s terms. We did not buy, redeem or test any card, contact a seller or change an account country. Nothing here is a statement about a particular reseller, price or discount.

Your pre-payment worksheet

Fill this in before you pay. Leave a cell UNKNOWN until you have seen the answer yourself, on the card, the seller’s listing or an Apple page. Never post a redemption code in a comment, a chat or a screenshot; Apple’s own US gift card page says "Do not share your code."

CheckYour answerWhy it matters
Exact card name printed on the card or listingUNKNOWNApple names its cards differently; the redeem page covers "Apple Gift Card, App Store Card, or App Store & iTunes Gift Card"
Does the card say it is only for products?UNKNOWNA products-only card cannot buy apps, subscriptions or other content
Country or region the card was purchased inUNKNOWNUS-purchased cards link only to US accounts and pay only for US purchases
What you want to buy (app, subscription, device, accessory)UNKNOWNDecides whether the card type can cover it
Country or region of your Apple AccountUNKNOWNFor a US-purchased card, the account must be in the United States
Seller proof you still need (receipt, purchase country, activation)UNKNOWNThis guide cannot confirm any seller; ask before paying
Official help page you checked, and the dateUNKNOWNApple can update its terms; the US terms say "Please check back regularly"

Two notes on the worksheet. Apple’s redeem page says "Gift cards aren’t available in all countries or regions," so a card for your account’s country may not exist at all. And the same page says "Some purchases might require that you have a credit card on file, even if you use your Apple Account balance."

Matching country and type is not the whole answer

A card that matches your account can still be a risky purchase from a reseller. Apple’s US terms say Gift Cards cannot be "resold," and that Apple and the issuer may "void or deactivate Gift Cards or content codes without a refund" if they suspect the cards "were obtained, used, or associated with an Account unlawfully, fraudulently, or otherwise in violation of these Terms." The fine print on Apple’s US gift card page says the cards are "Not redeemable at Apple resellers or for cash, and no resale, refunds, or exchanges, except as required by law." Those lines come from the US terms and page; check your card’s own country terms, and treat a third-party seller as a risk this guide cannot rate.

If the countries don’t match: what changing your account country requires

Changing your Apple Account country is not a guaranteed fix, and Apple lists conditions that can stop it. Before you update your location, Apple’s support page asks you to work through the following.

Prerequisite (Apple’s wording, shortened)What it means before you rely on a country change
"Spend any remaining Apple Account balance"Your current balance has to be used up first; if it is less than the cost of a single item, Apple says to contact Apple Support to clear it
"Cancel subscriptions that block a country or region change"Only the subscriptions that block the change; cancel them, "then wait until the end of the subscription period"
"Wait for pending activity to clear"Memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals or Season Passes must complete, and "pending refunds from Apple" must process
"Check your Family Sharing status"If you are in a Family Sharing group, "you might not be able to change your country or region"
"Have a valid payment method ready"You "might need to enter a valid payment method for your new country or region"
"Redownload your content""Some types of content might not be available in your new country or region"

Apple’s page also says that if you cancel Apple One or iCloud+, you should learn what happens to your information stored in iCloud first. If you don’t want to enter a payment method for the new country, Apple’s alternative is to wait until you’re physically in your new country or region and then create a new Apple Account. None of this guarantees that a particular card will redeem afterward.

FAQ

The card is valid, but it’s from another country. Will it work? Not under Apple’s US terms if the card was bought in the United States and your account is elsewhere: those cards "can only be linked to an Account in the United States." For cards purchased in other countries, check that country’s terms; we did not read them.

Can a card that says it’s for products pay for apps or subscriptions? No. Apple’s US terms say that if a Gift Card "indicates it is only for Products, you cannot use that Gift Card to purchase Content." Read the card’s own wording before you buy it for App Store use.

Can I use an Apple Gift Card anywhere other than Apple? No. Apple’s US gift card page says Apple Gift Cards "can be used only to purchase products and services from Apple," and warns that a request to pay for something not sold by Apple with them may be a scam.

Can I get my money back if I bought the wrong card? Not as a rule. Apple’s "Change your Apple Account country or region" page says you can’t redeem or return Apple Gift Cards, App Store Gift Cards, or unused Apple Account balance for cash, "except as required by law." If your jurisdiction allows refunds of redeemed gift balances, Apple’s page says you can contact Apple Support to request one. A retailer or seller refund is a separate question this guide cannot answer.

What if the card doesn’t work at all? Apple’s US terms say that if a gift card or content code "is nonfunctional, your sole remedy, and our sole liability, shall be the replacement of such gift card or content code," subject to applicable law. The same terms say the issuer "maintains information about the status of gift cards or codes" and tell US card holders to "Contact Apple for information about the status of your Account and any Associated Balance."

Next step

Before you decide whether to pay at all, confirm the card’s purchase country and its printed type, keep the resale lines above in mind, and read Apple’s gift card terms (US version), the redeem page and Change your Apple Account country or region. Facts checked October 9, 2026 (11:20 KST). Apple can change these pages at any time, so re-check them before relying on this guide. Nothing here is a test result, a seller recommendation or a promise that a card will redeem.
