Short answer: Microsoft’s current pages describe Microsoft 365 Family storage as 2 TB shared by the whole subscription, not 2 TB per person. Sharing that storage total is a separate question from who can open your files, and when an existing plan moves to the shared model depends on its renewal date and any eligible plan change.
Scope: Microsoft’s US-English support and product pages, checked October 11, 2026 (00:18 KST). This is a pre-purchase checklist, not a review of any account. We haven’t inspected a subscription, changed a plan, or uploaded, deleted or recovered any files for this article. Your market, renewal date and eligibility may differ.
1. Storage: one total, not six allowances
Microsoft’s storage page says: "Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscriptions include 2 TB of shared cloud storage." It adds that "The primary subscriber and up to five additional members draw from the same shared storage pool," and that storage "comes from a single shared pool rather than separate per-person allocations."
So the question to ask before paying is how much the whole household already stores, not how much one person needs. Microsoft gives no fixed per-person share, and we won’t guess one. The same page notes that storage add-ons bought by members are "automatically added to the shared pool," and that you "can add storage to your subscription, up to a total of 10 TB."
2. File access: sharing storage is not sharing files
The storage page draws this line directly: "While storage quotas are shared, files remain private. Each member can access only their own files unless they explicitly share content with others." It also says shared storage "changes how storage is allocated across the subscription, not who can see your files."
That describes who can see files by default. It isn’t a general security guarantee, and the page doesn’t describe how explicitly shared files are protected.
3. Transition: which plans move, and when
Microsoft’s pages separate new and existing subscriptions:
| Your situation | What Microsoft’s page says |
|---|---|
| New or upgraded subscription | Shared storage "starting October 8, 2026" |
| Existing Family or Premium | Generally after the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027 |
| Existing plan, eligible earlier plan change | Shared model "might be applied" earlier |
| Existing plan, downgrade before May 2, 2027 | Downgrade alone doesn’t move it; it moves at renewal on or after May 2, 2027 |
The storage page puts the exception plainly: the change for existing subscribers "generally takes effect after the first subscription renewal on or after May 2, 2027, unless an eligible plan change occurs earlier." For example, an existing subscriber who upgrades from Family to Premium before May 2, 2027 moves to the shared model, with "2 TB" as the new shared allocation.
Microsoft says "you’ll receive an email before your renewal." This table can’t tell you your own date. Microsoft’s product page says you can view or renew your subscription by signing into your Microsoft account and going to Services & Subscriptions.
If you bought through Apple, Google or a retailer, Microsoft’s switching page says "you’ll need to manage or switch subscription through that provider."
4. Bonus storage: possible, not promised
Microsoft says existing Family and Premium customers "who meet eligibility requirements in supported markets might receive bonus storage when their subscription renews after shared storage rolls out." The page doesn’t state any amount or duration. Treat any specific figure as UNKNOWN until Microsoft tells you directly.
