A Matching Play Country Does Not Make a Google Play Gift Card Usable Everywhere

Short answer: Before you buy or gift a Google Play gift card from another country, check three things: the country the card was purchased in and its currency, the Google Play country of the account that will redeem it, and where that person will physically be. Google’s help page says Google Play gift cards "are geo-restricted and can only be redeemed in the country of purchase," and that "To redeem a gift card, you must be present in the country where the gift card was purchased …" Setting your Play account to the card’s country is not enough on its own.

Scope: this guide covers ordinary Google Play gift cards and Play balance only, not gift cards from other brands; Google’s help page says "Make sure it’s a Google Play gift card. We can’t accept other types of gift cards." It is based on Google Play Help pages, the US Google Play gift card terms and, for two comparison points, the Korean terms (dated September 15, 2024), checked October 10, 2026 (05:39 KST). It is a review of official pages, not a redemption test: we did not buy, gift or redeem a card, change a Play country or contact support. Nothing here is a statement about a particular seller or price.

Your pre-buy worksheet

Fill this in before you pay. If any answer is UNKNOWN, stop and confirm it privately with the person who will redeem the card, on the card or listing itself, or in their own Play settings. Never post a redemption code in a comment or a screenshot.

Two lines from the same help page sit behind the table. "Make sure that the gift card currency matches your Play store currency," and "The gift card currency must match your payment profile settings." So a card and an account that seem to be in the same country are still worth a currency check.

If the card is a US card: eligibility in the US terms

The US gift card terms (dated May 1, 2019) set their own conditions. Section 1 says the cards and prepaid Play balance "are valid only for users who are 13 years of age or older, and who are residents of the USA," and that to redeem, "you will need to qualify for, and have or create a Google Payments account for the jurisdiction specified in these terms." For younger users: "For users between 13-17 years of age, your Google Payments enrollment is limited solely to redemption of Gift Cards and Credits."

Section 2 limits what the balance can buy: "The Gift Card or Credit may be used for purchases of eligible items on Google Play only. Limits may apply to redemption and use." The excluded items include "certain items in the “Devices” section of Google Play (e.g., phones, tablets and related device accessories) and certain subscriptions." So check the specific thing the recipient wants to buy, too.

These are US rules. Other countries have their own terms, and they are not identical: Korea’s terms, for example, set the minimum age at 14 and list specific refund cases (see the FAQ). Read the terms of the country where the card is sold.

Moving countries: what happens to the balance

Changing your Google Play country is slow and conditional, and it does not move money. Google’s "How to change your Google Play country" page says:

RuleWhat Google’s page says
Waiting period"you must wait at least 90 days before you can change it," and at least 90 days "between each subsequent change"; "In some cases, additional restrictions may apply."
Where you must be"you must be in that location and have a payment method from the new country or region"
Family groups"If you’re a member of a Google Family group, you can’t change your Google Play country or region."
Old balance"you can’t use the Google Play balance from your old country or region in your new country or region"
Getting it back"If you change your Google Play country back to your old country, you can use that balance again."

In other words, the old balance stays tied to the old country, and the page’s 90-day minimum applies "between each subsequent change" to your Play country.

Two different errors: redeeming the code vs. spending the balance

Google’s troubleshooting page separates two location errors. Knowing which one you see tells you which rule applies.

  • Redeeming the code abroad: "Couldn’t redeem this code. This code can only be used in [country/region]." The page says you must be in the card’s country of purchase, and "If you recently moved to another country, you may need to change your Google Play country."
  • Spending the balance abroad: "Couldn’t complete your transaction. Your Play balance can only be used in [country/region]." The page says: "To use Play balance, you must be present in the country where the gift card balance or the promotion was redeemed."

For travellers, both sections suggest trying again after you return home. If you are sure you are in the right country and still get the error, the page offers a support form. That is a route to ask for help, not a guaranteed fix.

Other errors are not about location. A card bought in a shop may not be activated: "Some gift cards bought at physical stores must be activated by the seller when they’re purchased. Google can’t activate gift cards on behalf of the store." And "If you get an error that says your code was already redeemed, then it can’t be redeemed again."

FAQ

Can I send a gift card from my country to a friend abroad? Only if the card’s country of purchase matches where your friend’s account is set and where they will be when they redeem it. Google’s help page says Play gift cards "can only be redeemed in the country of purchase." When they spend the balance, they will also need to be in the country where the card was redeemed.

I already redeemed a card and now I’m moving. Does the balance follow me? No. The country-change page says: "Your balance remains linked to your old country."

Can I change my Play country to the card’s country? Only under Google’s conditions: at least 90 days since you first set your Play country or last changed it, being physically in the new country, a payment method from that country, and not being in a Google Family group. Additional restrictions may apply.

Can I get a refund on a Google Play gift card? It depends on the country’s terms. The US terms say the card "is not redeemable for cash or other cards, is not reloadable or refundable" and cannot be resold or transferred for value, "except as required by law." Korea’s terms list cases where a refund is possible, including when the remaining balance is 40% of the face value or less. Neither applies to every country.

Do Google Play gift cards expire? Under the US terms, "No fees or expiration dates apply to this Gift Card or Credit." Rules differ by country: Google’s help page says "As of February 1, 2025, Play gift cards and gift card-funded Play balance have expired in Singapore."

Before you pay

Use the worksheet above, and leave nothing UNKNOWN. If something goes wrong after purchase, start with Google’s official page, Fix problems with Google Play gift cards & codes. For moving, see How to change your Google Play country. For the US rules, see the Google Play gift card terms (United States).
