Before Buying a Switch 2 USB Camera, Check the Feature You Actually Need

Short answer: You don’t need a camera for GameChat voice chat; Nintendo says voice works with the system’s built-in microphone. In GameChat, a compatible USB camera matters only for video chat, and Nintendo lists the camera test and the account and permission conditions separately.

Scope: Nintendo Canada’s "Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ", checked October 11, 2026 (00:05 KST). This is a limited pre-purchase checklist for English-speaking buyers, not a product review, an exhaustive setup guide or a promise about eligibility in every region. We haven’t bought, connected or tested any camera for this article.

Step 1: Which GameChat feature do you want?

Nintendo’s Canada FAQ answers the question directly: "A USB camera is not required for voice chat." It adds that "up to 12 people" can connect over GameChat "with audio only using the system’s built-in microphone," and that you can "video chat and share game screens with up to four people with a compatible USB camera."

Feature you wantCamera needed? (per the FAQ)
Voice chatNo, built-in microphone
Video chatYes, a compatible USB camera (sold separately)

If voice is all you want, a camera isn’t on your shopping list. Decide this first.

Step 2: The camera check

If you do want video, connecting by USB-C doesn’t prove the camera will work. On using your own USB camera, Nintendo says: "Your USB camera may be compatible. However, it is possible that some devices are not supported or are unstable."

The FAQ describes one test route: connect the camera "to the USB-C port on the top of the Nintendo Switch 2 system," then go from the HOME Menu to System Settings, then Controllers & Accessories, then Test USB Camera.

That’s Nintendo’s documented route, not a test we ran. The FAQ doesn’t say other ports or adapters work, so we don’t either.

Step 3: Separate access checks (Canada FAQ)

A camera that passes the test still doesn’t clear these. They’re separate conditions in the same Canada FAQ.

Service and account (Canada FAQ)

  • "In order to use GameChat, you need to be a Nintendo Switch Online member."
  • "Text message verification is required to set up GameChat, using the phone number registered to your Nintendo Account."

Players under 16 and supervised users (Canada FAQ)

Nintendo lists two groups here: players under the age of 16, and supervised users. Either one is covered; a player doesn’t have to be both.

  • For each GameChat session, they need "a parent or guardian to allow use of the GameChat feature" in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart device app.
  • They "can only use GameChat with Nintendo Account friends approved by their parent or guardian."
  • "Video chat using a compatible USB camera (sold separately) also requires separate permission."

These conditions come from Nintendo’s Canada page. Rules for other regions, including Korea, may differ; check your own region’s official page. Treating the camera test and these checks as separate is our editorial reading of the FAQ, not a way around any of them.

FAQ

Do I need a camera for voice chat? No. Nintendo’s Canada FAQ says a USB camera is not required for voice chat; audio uses the built-in microphone.

Does plugging into USB-C prove the camera is compatible? No. Nintendo says your camera "may be compatible," but some devices may not be supported or may be unstable. Use the Test USB Camera route it documents.

Does passing the camera test clear account permissions? No. Membership, text message verification and, for players under 16 or supervised users, per-session parent or guardian permission, parent-approved friends only and separate video permission are listed as their own conditions.

Can this guide guarantee a camera works with a given game or mode? No. Check the current official requirements for your exact camera model and the feature you want.
