Scope: Spotify’s U.S. support site only, checked October 4, 2026 (09:35 KST). Rules and offers may differ in other countries and can change. This guide gives no current price and can’t tell you whether your account will be accepted. We haven’t signed up for, joined or tested a Family plan for this article.
Short answer: Before you compare Family offers, check the household, not just the number of listeners. Spotify describes Premium Family as "a discounted plan for up to 6 family members who live together, including the plan manager." And "The plan manager is the only person who signs up and pays for the plan." Each member has a separate account and logs in with their own details.
What to check before anyone signs up
| What to check | Evidence you can gather yourself | Spotify rule that applies (U.S. support) |
|---|---|---|
| Do all members actually live together? | Who lives at the address you’d enter | Members must be "living with the plan manager" and must "Enter the same home address as the plan manager upon joining the plan." |
| Which account will each member join with? | The login each person uses today | "You need to be logged into your own Spotify account and have received an email to join." The invite asks you to confirm "the right Spotify account." |
| Who is the manager, and who are members? | Who will pay | The manager "can add or remove members" and "can’t join other plans." Only the manager is charged: "never other members." |
| How will the manager pay, and how is their Premium billed today? | Whether the future manager pays Spotify directly or a partner (phone or internet provider) | "You can’t pay for Premium Family by mobile, or with another company." If the manager already pays that way, "you first need to cancel and wait for your current Premium to end." |
| Address country vs. payment method | Country where the payment method was issued | "You can only select an address in the same country where your payment method was issued." |
If your payment method was issued outside the U.S., this U.S. guide may not apply. Check Spotify’s support site for your own country. And whatever the country, Spotify says: "Just don’t use someone else’s address."
Two different 12-month rules
These are easy to confuse.
The general switching limit. Spotify’s Family plan page says: "Plan members can only switch plans once every 12 months." The Family plan article doesn’t list exceptions to this rule.
A failed re-verification. Spotify asks members to confirm their full address when they join, when the manager changes address, or "If we can’t confirm their address." Spotify adds: "We don’t track your location. We only check your address to verify." If it can’t confirm something, it emails the member, who must "enter their full address within 7 days of getting the email." If verification "fails or they miss the 7-day window," the account "switches to the free version of Spotify." The member "can join the same Family or Duo plan again, but won’t be able to join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months from the date the verification failed."
So after a failed verification, rejoining the same plan is allowed. Joining a different Family or Duo plan isn’t, for 12 months. Don’t apply that same-plan exception to ordinary plan switching.
Already on Premium Individual and joining as a member?
Spotify says that if you already have Premium, "your billing switches automatically – you don’t need to cancel anything." For members it adds: "All payments are made by the plan’s manager. Any remaining Premium time you have is forfeited." The three Spotify articles we checked don’t mention a credit or refund for that time. Becoming the manager works differently. The manager pays, and "Your new payment date will likely be a few days earlier than usual to cover the price difference." If the future manager’s Premium is billed by a partner, the cancel-and-wait rule in the table applies first. These articles don’t say how partner billing affects someone joining as a member. If that’s you, check with Spotify support.

FAQ
We live at different addresses. Can we still share? Spotify’s rule is that members live with the manager and enter the same home address. Don’t enter an address you don’t live at.
The invite isn’t working. Use Spotify’s "Can’t join Family plan" help article or contact Spotify support. We can’t promise a fix.
What will it cost, and will my account qualify? We don’t know. Check the current offer on Spotify’s site. Nothing here confirms your eligibility.
