Buying an iPhone 18 Pro Abroad? Four Checks Before You Pay

Checked October 2, 2026 against Apple’s announcement and support pages. We have not used or tested an imported iPhone 18 Pro; this is a checklist built only from Apple’s published guidance.

An iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max bought in another country can look cheaper, but the selling country decides which model you get — and a price tag does not tell you whether the phone will work with your carrier at home. Check these four things first.

1. Is the selling country an eSIM-only region?

Apple says eSIM-only models of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are sold in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.S. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These models use the space formerly occupied by the physical SIM for a larger battery, so there is no SIM tray. Labels such as "International" or a country name in a store listing do not settle this; ask the seller for the exact selling country and model.

2. Is the phone unlocked?

To use an iPhone with a different carrier, it cannot be locked to a carrier. To check: Settings > General > About — if "No SIM restrictions" appears next to Carrier Lock, the iPhone is unlocked. Apple can’t unlock an iPhone for use with a different carrier; only the current carrier can. If the phone you are buying is locked, only the carrier it is locked to can release it, so confirm the unlock status with the seller before you pay.

3. Does your plan support eSIM?

Apple’s guidance is to contact your carrier to confirm that it supports eSIM on your cellular plan. An eSIM-only model has no SIM tray, so if your plan does not support eSIM, you cannot use that line on the phone even if it is unlocked and the bands match.

4. Do the cellular bands match?

Apple also says to check the iPhone’s cellular band support for country compatibility. Compare the selling-country model’s bands with what your carrier uses, using your carrier and Apple’s specifications.

Compare prices last

Only after the four checks pass is a price comparison meaningful — and then compare the delivered total, including shipping, tax, returns and warranty terms, not the sticker price.
