The short answer: A Google One membership replaces your current storage plan and isn’t added on top of existing storage — the plan size is your new total. If your free 15 GB is already full, a 100 GB plan gives you a 100 GB ceiling, not 115 GB. (Promotional storage and Workspace Individual differ — see section 2.)
Checked October 2, 2026 against Google One Help Center pages and the Google One Special Pricing Offer Terms. We have not bought a plan or inspected any account for this guide; it is built only from those published pages. It does not cover country prices or refunds.
When the "storage full" warning appears, the upgrade button is right there. But the same purchase can turn out differently depending on which account it lands on, whether the plan adds to your storage or replaces it, where your existing subscription was bought, and what you pay once a discount ends. Fill in these four fields before you pay.
The pre-pay worksheet
1. Account
- What to check: Is the signed-in account the one that is out of space?
- What Google’s pages say: If you’re signed into multiple accounts, Google One may be purchased on a different account.
2. Total limit
- What to check: Is the plan size your new total, not an add-on?
- What Google’s pages say: A membership replaces your current storage plan and isn’t added on top of existing storage (promotional storage and Workspace Individual differ — see section 2).
3. Billing route
- What to check: Where was any existing plan bought — web/Google Play, App Store, or a carrier?
- What Google’s pages say: Where you can change the plan depends on how it was bought; carrier plans are changed or cancelled with the carrier.
4. After-offer price
- What to check: What is charged when a discounted period ends, and when?
- What Google’s pages say: The membership ends with the Offer Period unless you subscribe; if you do, the standard price is charged until you cancel.
1. Account: if several accounts are signed in, check first
Google One Help says that if a charge appears on your card but you don’t find a payment on your Google Account, check whether you’re signed into multiple Google Accounts — Google One may have been purchased on a different account. Google says you can cancel the purchase on that account and repurchase on the account you want.
If you plan to pay on an iPhone or iPad, note that Google says you can link your Apple account to only one Google Account. The simplest check is whether the account email shown at checkout matches the account that is full.
2. Total limit: a 100 GB plan is not "100 GB more"
Every Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Google One Help says a membership replaces your current storage plan: the membership storage becomes your new storage limit and isn’t added on top of your existing storage.
Google’s own example puts it in numbers: on a 100 GB plan, total storage is up to 15 GB default storage plus 85 GB from the Google One membership — 100 GB in total. Another Google page describes Google One storage as "added on top of" the up-to-15 GB; that refers to the same 15 + 85 arithmetic, so the total still equals the plan size. If your free 15 GB is already full, a 100 GB plan gives you a 100 GB ceiling, not 115 GB — roughly 85 GB of new room.
Exceptions to note:
- Storage you got as part of a promotion is kept, but when the promotion expires your personal storage totals go back to what they were before it.
- A Workspace Individual plan comes with 1 TB, and Google says Google One plan storage is in addition to Workspace Individual storage.
If you plan to share with family, count that in too: in Google’s example, the 85 GB of Google One storage on a 100 GB plan is shared by all 4 members of the family group, and by default family members can use any amount of the available storage.
Also, it may take up to 24 hours for new storage to become available after you buy a new plan, so a limit that hasn’t changed right after checkout is not by itself a sign the payment failed.
3. Billing route: how you bought it limits where you can change it
- If you signed up through the App Store on an iPhone or iPad and later switch to an Android device, you can’t adjust your membership or change your payment method in the app; Google says to use the App Store on another device.
- If you signed up on the Google One website or another device, you can’t change your plan on your iPhone or iPad. A plan bought on the website can be managed on the web at Google One.
- To manage the membership with the app on an iPhone or iPad, you must buy a plan with an Apple subscription; Google’s steps are to cancel the existing plan first, then buy with an Apple subscription.
- If the subscription started through a third-party provider such as a mobile carrier, you must go to that provider’s website or app to change or cancel the Google One plan.
If you already pay for a plan, confirm its route before buying a bigger one somewhere else.
4. After-offer price: what you pay when the discount ends
The Google One Special Pricing Offer Terms (last updated September 2, 2026) say the offer gives a discounted subscription price for the promoted period, and you can confirm the Offer Period end date on your Subscriptions page in the Google Play Store. Your membership ends when the Offer Period ends unless you subscribe; if you do, your payment method is charged the standard Google One subscription price, monthly or annually depending on the plan, until you cancel.
The same terms say the offer requires a Google Payments account with a qualifying form of payment, is limited to new users, trialers, and existing monthly AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra users, and may not be combined with other Google One offers. Whether your account qualifies is something to confirm at checkout, not assume.
Prices themselves can change. Google announced that, effective July 27, 2026, prices of Google One plans purchased from Google would increase in select countries and regions — the list names Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey — and that increases vary by plan and currency. That notice is limited to those countries; Google says you can check your current plan and price from Google One.
Checklist before you pay
- Does the account email at checkout match the account that is full?
- Does the plan’s total size cover what you need, counting the up-to-15 GB default inside it?
- If you already subscribe: web/Google Play, App Store or carrier?
- If it’s a discount: when does it end, and what is the standard price after it?
- If storage hasn’t changed after 24 hours: which account did the payment land on?
Prices and offer terms change, so re-check the checkout screen and Google One’s pages on the day you pay.
