Checked October 3, 2026 (01:35 KST) against Google’s Workspace Updates post of September 30, 2026 and the Gemini Apps Help page "About the transition from Gems to skills". We have not used, moved or tested any Gem or skill on our own account for this guide.
Short answer: Gems are not all disappearing on one day. Google is replacing Gems with skills, but the date that matters depends on the type of account you sign in with — personal, work, or school. Google also says it will automatically transition your Gems to skills when Gems go away, so you don’t have to rebuild everything right now. (One catch: Google’s Workspace post says auto-migrated Gems become draft skills in the Gemini app only — if you want them in Workspace apps, you’ll need to create them there too.)
Start by working out which of the three groups you are in. Then check what your Gems actually contain.
Step 1: Find your row
| Account type | What Google has announced | Exact removal date confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google Account | Help: Gems go away in November 2026. Skills are already available in Gemini chat to individuals over 18 on a personal account. | No — the Help page gives the month, not a day. |
| Work (Workspace business / enterprise) | Blog: Gems can no longer be created, edited or used no sooner than March 1, 2027. Help lists March 2027 for business, enterprise and non-profit accounts. | No — "no sooner than" is a floor, not a fixed date. |
| School (Workspace education) | Blog: no sooner than June 1, 2027, including Google Classroom and third-party LMS supported by Gemini LTI. Help: June 2027. | No — also "no sooner than". |
Two other sets of dates from Google’s Workspace Updates post get mixed in with the deadlines above:
- November 17, 2026 — the Workspace post says Gems move to the Settings panel of the Gemini app, and users can continue to create, edit and use them. For work and school accounts, that’s a move, not a removal. For personal accounts, be careful: the Help page only says "November 2026" and doesn’t say whether personal removal falls before, on or after November 17.
- October 5, 13 and 19, 2026 — these are when skills start rolling out for Workspace: in Workspace apps from October 5 for Rapid Release domains (expected done by October 12) and October 19 for Scheduled Release domains (expected done by mid-November), and in the Gemini app from October 13 (expected done by mid-November). A start date for a gradual rollout doesn’t mean every account sees skills that day.
If your organization uses Workspace Studio: new flows with the "Ask a Gem" step can no longer be created, and existing ones stop working on the same "no sooner than" dates as your account row.
Step 2: Inventory each Gem in three parts
Before you rebuild anything by hand, write down what each Gem relies on. Leave a box empty if you’re not sure — empty means "check", not "fine".
| Gem name | Instructions (name, description, prompt text) | Knowledge files | Tools it depends on |
|---|---|---|---|
Why split it this way? Because the three parts move differently:
- Instructions: for a manual rebuild, Google’s steps say to copy and paste the name, description and instructions from your Gem into a new skill.
- Knowledge files: if you rebuild manually now, you’ll need to download the files individually, then upload them together with the skill. Google says GitHub files aren’t supported in skills for now. The automatic transition covers your Gems "along with any supported files".
- Tools: this is the column to look at most carefully (see below).
Step 3: Know the current limits
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page is direct about what skills in the Gemini app don’t do yet:
- For now, most default tools available in Gems do not work with skills, including Create video, Create music, Canvas, Deep research and Guided learning.
- Sharing skills with others and adding files from Google Drive are listed as coming "in the coming weeks" — not available yet in that answer.
- Only 100 skills can be active at a time.
And from the Workspace post:
- Currently, skills don’t sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps. If you want the same skill in both, you have to create it separately in each.
So if a Gem leans on Deep research or Canvas, a manual rebuild today won’t behave the same. That’s a reason to check, not to panic: on the published timeline, personal accounts have until November and work and school accounts until 2027.
What skills add: they work inline in any chat, and you can stack several in one prompt. They use the SKILL.md format, so skills made elsewhere can be imported (for now, uploading files to create a skill works only in the Gemini app on Mac and at gemini.google.com).
Before you do anything
- [ ] I know whether I’m on a personal, work or school account.
- [ ] I’ve read my row as a month or a "no sooner than" date — not as a universal deadline.
- [ ] I’ve listed each Gem’s instructions, files and tools.
- [ ] I’ve marked any Gem that uses a tool skills don’t support yet.
- [ ] If I use Workspace and the Gemini app, I know a skill has to be created in each.
None of these checks involve buying anything. For the latest wording, open Google’s Help page with your own account signed in.
