Before Choosing a DigitalOcean Droplet, Check Which Monthly Cap You Are Assuming

Short answer: The monthly cap belongs to the bundled-plan CPU Droplet, not to DigitalOcean as a whole. DigitalOcean’s documentation says bundled-plan CPU Droplet usage "is capped at 672 hours (28 days) per month," while "Unlike bundled plans, v5 Droplets do not have a monthly usage cap." A v5 Droplet is a configured meter: you pick vCPU, memory and boot disk, and "The monthly total for a continuously running v5 Droplet varies based on the number of hours in the month." So before you compare two Droplets, identify the configuration type. A cap that applies to one Droplet plan is not a ceiling on your account’s invoice.

Scope: CPU Droplets only, based on two public DigitalOcean pages, the documentation page "Droplet Pricing" (its own label says "Last verified 25 Aug 2026") and the Droplet pricing page with its FAQ, both checked October 7, 2026 (12:17 KST). We read the published text. We did not create, resize or destroy a Droplet, open a billing account or check which configurations your account can order. GPU Droplets, bandwidth, backups and every other invoice line are out of scope.

Bundled CPU plan or v5 configuration: which bill basis applies

DigitalOcean’s documentation opens with the rule that matters here: "Droplet pricing depends on the configuration type." The table below keeps the two CPU types apart. Only the v5 row is limited to datacenters that support v5 configurations.

ConfigurationBill basis and cap (DigitalOcean’s wording)What to confirm before ordering
Bundled-plan CPU Droplet (Basic, CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, Memory-Optimized, Storage-Optimized)Billed "per second with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher." Usage "is capped at 672 hours (28 days) per month." The pricing FAQ adds that with the cap "you’ll never pay more than the flat monthly price for that plan."The exact plan and its displayed hourly and monthly price for your region; that the cap covers that plan only, not every line on the invoice; that a powered-off bundled Droplet is still billed, because "the compute resources stay reserved on the hypervisor"
v5 Droplet, in a datacenter that supports v5 configurationsThe Control Panel "displays an hourly price for each resource (vCPU, memory, and boot disk)." The Droplet "is billed per second at an hourly rate that is the sum of the configured resources, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher." No monthly usage cap; the monthly total "varies based on the number of hours in the month." The resources "still combine into a single line on your invoice."Whether your chosen region and vCPU type are offered to your account; the per-resource hourly rates shown while you configure; how many hours you intend to run it in the calendar month; whether you want DigitalOcean’s own suggestion, "setting up spend alerts," since there is no cap to stop the meter

Two things this table does not say. It does not say which type is cheaper for you; the answer depends on the resources you configure and the hours you run, and we have run no comparison. And it does not say that every v5 combination exists in every datacenter; the documentation ties v5 pricing to supported datacenters, and your account’s catalog was not checked.

The public IPv4 line is scoped differently too

For bundled plans the pricing FAQ says "a public IPv4 is included at no extra cost." For v5, both pages say that public IPv4 addresses "are billed separately from the v5 configuration and appear as their own line item on your invoice," and that the line’s introductory price "is subject to change in accordance with the DigitalOcean Terms of Service."

That means a v5 estimate has at least two lines, the configuration and the IPv4 address, and the second one carries an introductory price that DigitalOcean reserves the right to change. We are not printing today’s introductory amount here, because it is not a promise, and this guide makes no claim about reserved or floating IP pricing.

FAQ

Does every DigitalOcean Droplet have a monthly cap? No. The 672-hour cap is stated for bundled-plan CPU Droplets. v5 Droplets "are not capped at 672 hours." GPU Droplets and other services are outside this guide.

Is v5 always cheaper than a bundled plan? Not verified. v5 bills the configured resources per second at an hourly rate with no cap; a bundled plan has a flat monthly ceiling. Which is lower depends on your configuration and hours, and we ran no benchmark or price comparison.

Is the v5 public IPv4 line permanently free? No promise. DigitalOcean calls the line-item price introductory and "subject to change." Treat it as a separate line whose price you re-check on the day you order.

Does this give me my whole invoice? No. The cap and the meter describe one Droplet’s compute line. Bandwidth, add-ons, taxes, credits and the rest of your account are UNKNOWN here.

Next step

Open DigitalOcean’s Droplet Pricing documentation and match your configuration type to its CPU section before you order; the Droplet pricing page and FAQ is the second source used here. Facts checked October 7, 2026 (12:17 KST). DigitalOcean can change these pages and the introductory IPv4 price, so re-check both before relying on this guide. Nothing here is a test result, a savings estimate or a statement about your account.
