Buying a Used Apple Device With AppleCare? Check the Transfer Conditions Before You Pay

Scope: Apple’s public guide "Transfer your AppleCare plan" (U.S. English version), checked October 3, 2026 (17:34 KST). We have not bought a device, contacted Apple or attempted a transfer for this article, and nothing here describes a specific listing or plan.

Short answer: Coverage showing for a used device doesn’t tell you whether the plan can move to you. Apple’s guide says that when a device is sold or given away, the owner "might be able to transfer" the AppleCare plan to the new owner. That is a possibility, not a promise. Before you put a value on the coverage, identify the plan, how it is paid for, whether it is linked to an Apple Account, and which country’s terms apply. Then confirm the transfer route with Apple.

Can AppleCare transfer to a new owner? Three cases

Plan / payment evidenceWhat Apple’s guide documentsWhat still needs confirming
Paid monthly or annually and already linked to an Apple AccountIf the owner makes monthly or annual payments for the plan "and your plan is already linked to an Apple Account, then it can’t be transferred to a new owner." Both conditions are in that sentence.Ask the seller which payment arrangement applies and whether the plan is linked to an Apple Account.
Any other arrangementThe plan "might" be transferable. "For some AppleCare plan types, and in some countries or regions, you might not be able to transfer an AppleCare plan to a new owner."The exact plan type and the applicable AppleCare Terms and Conditions for the country or region. Treat transfer as UNKNOWN until Apple confirms it.
Apple replaced the device instead of repairing itA separate case: "If we replace your device instead of repairing it, we’ll automatically transfer your plan to your new device." If that isn’t possible, Apple says it will "offer other options."The guide describes this for the owner’s replacement device, separately from the new-owner steps.

Source for every row: Apple Support, "Transfer your AppleCare plan".

A footnote on the payment option matters too: monthly or annual payment "is not available for all AppleCare plans or all countries and regions." So the payment question has to be asked, not assumed.

Your pre-purchase worksheet

Fill this in from what the seller shows you and what Apple tells you. Leave a cell UNKNOWN until you have seen it. Don’t write serial numbers, agreement numbers, names, addresses, emails, logins or payment details here; those go only between the parties and Apple.

If the last row is still UNKNOWN when you’re deciding on price, value the device as if the coverage won’t come with it.

What the transfer process asks for

Apple’s guide lists the steps for the current owner. In categories:

  1. Plan, device and coverage details, which the guide says the owner gets by signing in to My Support.
  2. The original sales receipt for the device.
  3. The new owner’s contact information.
  4. Contact Apple Support.

Treat those details as private: they belong with the seller, the buyer and Apple, and this article doesn’t collect them. If the seller can’t produce the receipt or the plan details, the transfer question stays open.

What this guide can’t tell you

  • Whether a specific plan is eligible, or whether coverage continues after the sale.
  • Whether a repair would be approved or what it would cost.
  • Whether a seller will complete the steps, or whether you could buy a new plan yourself.
  • AppleCare One or family plans, pricing, or theft and loss coverage, which this transfer guide doesn’t cover.

Forum stories are individual outcomes, not rules. This isn’t legal or insurance advice. Don’t cancel plans or change account settings on someone else’s behalf.

FAQ

Does monthly billing on its own mean the plan can’t transfer? Apple’s sentence has two conditions: monthly or annual payments and a plan already linked to an Apple Account. Confirm both, then check the plan’s terms.

The seller had their device replaced by Apple. Doesn’t the plan follow the device? The replacement scenario is about Apple moving the plan to the owner’s replacement device. Selling to you is a different case covered by the new-owner steps.

What records should I sort out before paying? Every UNKNOWN row in the worksheet above, starting with the payment arrangement, account linkage and original receipt.

Next step

Before you pay extra for the coverage, ask the seller to confirm with Apple Support whether the plan can be transferred to you.
