Before paying to view older Slack messages, confirm whether that history is hidden but retained or has already been permanently deleted.
Scope: Slack’s Help Centre (UK English edition) on message and file history in free workspaces, checked October 4, 2026 (15:38 KST). This reflects the current Help text, not a new October policy: Slack said deletion of year-old data on free workspaces would start on 26 August 2024. We haven’t administered a Slack workspace or tested an upgrade for this article, and we quote no plan prices.
Short answer: Slack says that on the free version "you’ll be limited to the most recent 90 days of message and file history," and that "When you upgrade, your messages and files beyond the 90-day limit will be revealed." That only helps with history Slack still holds. A workspace owner may have chosen 90-day deletion, data older than one year is deleted, and Slack’s FAQ is direct: "It will not be possible to restore messages and files once deletion occurs."
Hidden, deleted early, or deleted for good?
| Observed situation | Official retention condition | What an upgrade does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| History older than 90 days isn’t visible | Free workspaces keep "full access to the past 90 days of message and file history, and the remaining 275 days will become available should you upgrade to a paid subscription." | That a specific missing message or file is still stored. That depends on the two rows below. |
| The owner chose 90-day deletion | On the free subscription, "you can choose to retain data for 90 days or one year." With "Delete messages after 90 days", "Slack will delete messages, edits and deletions after 90 days." The file option "Keep files for 90 days, including deleted content" also permanently deletes files after 90 days. | Any way back: "Data deleted according to your retention setting is permanent." |
| History is older than one year | "Data older than one year will be deleted from your workspace on a rolling basis." | Recovery. Deleted messages and files can’t be restored, paid plan or not. |
Don’t read "one year" as an exact deletion day: Slack describes that deletion as running "on a rolling basis." Changing a setting can also act quickly, because "Deletions run once per day, so data may be deleted shortly after making a change to your retention settings."
Exceptions: Slack Connect and third-party files
Messages and files are separate settings, so check each one.
Messages in Enterprise-sponsored Slack Connect channels. Under the free one-year message option, messages are permanently deleted after a year "with the exception of those sent in Slack Connect channels sponsored by an Enterprise organisation." The FAQ phrases it more broadly: "If you work in Slack Connect channels with an Enterprise organisation, messages and files in those channels will not be deleted if you set a one-year retention policy." The retention page states the exception only for messages; the FAQ extends it to files. Either way it’s narrow: the one-year setting with an Enterprise organisation, not every shared channel. If the difference matters, ask Slack.
Files from third-party apps. The free 90-day file option deletes "snippets, uploaded files and those shared via third-party apps, such as Dropbox or Google Drive." But Slack adds: "Files shared via third-party apps remain stored in the service that they originated from. Deleting them from Slack won’t affect the original files." That’s a question for the other service, not a reason to upgrade.
Blank pre-upgrade worksheet
Fill this in yourself and leave each cell UNKNOWN until it’s checked. Don’t paste names, private message text, logins or payment details.
| Item | Your entry |
|---|---|
| Exact workspace and current plan | UNKNOWN |
| Missing item: message or file? | UNKNOWN |
| When it was created (approximate age) | UNKNOWN |
| Message retention option the owner selected (one year / 90 days) | UNKNOWN |
| File retention option the owner selected (one year / 90 days) | UNKNOWN |
| Slack Connect channel with an Enterprise organisation? | UNKNOWN |
| Copies that already exist elsewhere (e.g. third-party file originals) | UNKNOWN |
| Still unresolved after the checks above? | UNKNOWN |
| Slack support’s current answer, with date | UNKNOWN |
If the item is older than the selected retention period and the Slack Connect exception above doesn’t apply, Slack’s pages say deleted data is permanent and can’t be restored, so paying isn’t a recovery route. Confirm with the workspace owner and Slack first.
FAQ
Does "90 days" always mean my history was deleted? No. It’s the visible window on free workspaces. Whether older history is still stored depends on the owner’s retention option and the data’s age.
If I pay, will deleted history come back? No. Deletion is permanent on Slack’s pages; an upgrade reveals only history Slack still holds.
What should I verify first? Ask the workspace owner which message and file retention options are selected. Retention settings are available to "Workspace owners and org owners." Then fill in the worksheet and compare it with Slack’s current Help pages before deciding whether to pay.
