PS5 SSD Before You Buy: Play or Store, Heatsink Fit, and the Real Checkout Total

Checked October 3, 2026 (01:41 KST) against one official page: PlayStation Support’s "How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console" (US). We have not bought, installed or tested any SSD, heatsink or console. This is a pre-purchase documentation checklist, not a product recommendation or a "best SSD" list.

Short answer: Before you buy a PS5 SSD, decide whether you need to store PS5 games or play them. Sony’s FAQ says "PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage," while PS5 games on USB extended storage "need to be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to be played." If you want to play PS5 games from the new drive, you are shopping for an M.2 SSD, and besides Sony’s spec table, two checks are easy to miss: the size of the drive with its cooling attached, and whether that cooling is already in the price.

Step 1: Play or store?

You want to…What Sony’s FAQ says
Play PS5 games from the new drive"PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage." They "can be downloaded directly to M.2 SSD storage" and "can be updated on M.2 SSD storage."
Park PS5 games you aren’t playing right now"PS5 games can be moved to USB extended storage, but they need to be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to be played."

Sony’s M.2 page also notes that "All game data for a specific game must be stored in the same place," so you can’t split one game between console storage and the M.2 drive. The rest of this checklist is for the M.2 route.

Step 2: The official M.2 checklist

Sony lists these requirements, and says to make sure the console "has the latest system software update before installing a compatible M.2 SSD drive."

RequirementSony’s wording
InterfacePCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M)
Storage space250 GB – 8 TB
Form factor2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110
Socket typeSocket 3 (Key M)
Sequential read speed"5,500MB/s or faster is recommended"
Not supported"M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported."

Two things to keep separate here. First, read speed is listed as recommended, not as a fit or cooling requirement. Second, a faster number on the box isn’t a promise: Sony says "Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s." Sony also notes the PS5 doesn’t support Host Memory Buffer (HMB), and that drives that support HMB "may experience slower-than-expected performance."

Step 3: Check the fit with the heatsink on

Cooling isn’t optional. Sony says "Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink and a heat transfer sheet," and "Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heat-dissipation mechanism."

The size limits apply to the assembled drive. Sony’s table is titled "Size including heat-dissipation mechanism":

  • Width: up to 25 mm
  • Length: 30/42/60/80/110 mm
  • Thickness: up to 11.25 mm (up to 8.0 mm from above the board, up to 2.45 mm from below the board)

Sony’s reason for spelling this out: most bare drives of those form factors "will fit the PS5 console’s SSD slot. However, sizes for cooling structures (like heatsinks) vary greatly." So compare the stated assembled dimensions (from the heatsink maker, or the drive maker for built-in cooling), above and below the board, against those numbers. If a listing doesn’t state them, write UNKNOWN; Sony’s own advice when you’re unsure is "looking for another product option or contacting the vendor or manufacturer." Sony adds that "single-sided cooling structures are an easier fit," and, if a drive "has a built-in heatsink, we recommend against adding any additional heatsinks."

Step 4: The unpriced checkout worksheet

A cheaper bare SSD isn’t the whole checkout total. Sony says the cooling parts "might come with" the drive "or you might need to purchase them separately." Fill in your own numbers from the actual listings. We don’t list prices, and you shouldn’t copy anyone’s example figures; leave a cell UNKNOWN until the listing states it.

Limits of this guide

  • Meeting the table isn’t a guarantee. Sony: "SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products."
  • First-time use means formatting: "When you format your M.2 SSD, any data saved on the drive is erased." Move anything you need off the drive before installing it.

Quick checklist

  • [ ] I need to play PS5 games from the new drive (M.2), not just store them (USB).
  • [ ] The drive is PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe (Key M), 250 GB – 8 TB, in a listed form factor, not M.2 SATA.
  • [ ] The assembled size with cooling is within 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick (8.0 mm above, 2.45 mm below the board).
  • [ ] I know whether cooling is included or a separate purchase, and my total covers it.
  • [ ] Anything a listing doesn’t state is marked UNKNOWN, not guessed.
