Short answer: Support ending is not the same as Office 2021 shutting off. For Office 2021 at home, Microsoft says you’ll still be able to use it, but support, software updates and security fixes end. Microsoft doesn’t promise that every copy keeps working the same way, so check your exact edition and how it is licensed before you pay for anything.
Scope: Microsoft’s own pages on Office 2021 end of support, the Office 2021 lifecycle listing, finding your Office version and upgrading Office, checked October 12, 2026, 10:12 KST (October 12, 01:12 UTC). On October 13, 2026, 11:38 KST (02:38 UTC) we re-read those pages and added the Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2021 Lifecycle listings for the case table below. This is a reading of Microsoft’s pages, not a test. We haven’t installed, activated or inspected Office 2021 or any replacement, and we can’t see what your own copy shows.
Support vs. continued use
| Question | What Microsoft’s pages say |
|---|---|
| Can I keep using Office 2021 at home? | You’ll "still be able to use it"; apps "may continue to function" |
| Will I still get fixes and updates? | No. Bug fixes, security fixes, software updates and phone/chat support end; no extension, no extended security updates |
| What does upgrading take? | For a one-time purchase: buy the latest version, either a Microsoft 365 subscription or the newest one-time purchase version |
| Office from work or school? | Contact your IT Help Desk; your IT department likely has its own upgrade plan |
Microsoft doesn’t describe the apps locking when support ends. The risk it names is security: after support ends, "you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks."
A note on the date. Microsoft’s support article says support for Office 2021 "will end October 13, 2026" and that there will be "no extension and no extended security updates." Microsoft’s Lifecycle page says its dates are shown in Pacific Time (Redmond) and lists the Office 2021 retirement date as "10/14/2026 6:59:59 AM." The two pages display the date differently, so we don’t turn either into an exact local deadline or countdown.
Step 1: Identify the exact edition you have
The Lifecycle page lists the Office 2021 editions it covers: Home and Business, Home and Business for Mac, Home and Student, Home and Student for Mac, and Professional. Microsoft’s end-of-support article gives Office Home & Student 2021 and Office Home & Business 2021 as examples of Office 2021 at home.
To check yours, Microsoft’s "Find details for other versions of Office" page says to open an Office app such as Word and match what you see with the screen captures on that page. Its examples are labeled Microsoft 365 for Windows (File > Account, then About Word) and Microsoft 365 for Mac (the Word menu, then About Word). On Mac, Microsoft says the About dialog shows the version number and the license type. Your Office 2021 screens may not match those examples exactly, so use Microsoft’s page rather than a menu path from us.
Write down the product name exactly as your copy shows it, and the license type if your copy shows it. "Office" alone isn’t enough to compare replacements.
Step 2: Understand what a replacement gives you
For a one-time purchase like Office 2021, Microsoft’s "How do I upgrade Office?" page says:
- To upgrade a one-time (non-subscription) purchase: "you’ll need to buy the latest version." Microsoft lists two routes: a Microsoft 365 subscription such as Personal, Family, Premium or Pro, or the newest one-time purchase version.
- If you buy Office 2024 as a one-time purchase: Microsoft names Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024. It says you "can only install these versions of Office on one device," and that you get security updates and fixes during the supported period but not new features or other Microsoft 365 benefits.
One trap: not every Microsoft 365 plan includes desktop Office apps. Microsoft says "Microsoft 365 Basic doesn’t include the desktop apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint." If you need desktop Word or Excel, check the plan’s included apps on Microsoft’s page before buying. If you also use Publisher, its retirement treats Microsoft 365 and perpetual copies differently.
Microsoft also says to make sure your device meets the minimum requirements before you upgrade. A newer version isn’t guaranteed to suit every computer, operating system, macro or add-in you use today.
Case by case: what Microsoft’s pages say about your copy
Use Step 1 to see what your Office app shows, then find the matching row. Each row quotes what Microsoft’s pages say for that case and what follows before you buy. We haven’t tested any row on a real installation, and Microsoft can change its pages, so open the linked page again on the day you decide.
| If your copy shows, or you need | What Microsoft’s pages say | What that means before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| "Microsoft 365" (a subscription), not Office 2021 | For Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, Microsoft says "you already have the most current version of Office at no additional cost." Microsoft 365 isn’t one of the editions on the Office 2021 Lifecycle page. | If your plan is Personal or Family, Office 2021’s end of support isn’t about this copy, and there is nothing to buy because of it. |
| Office Home & Student 2021 or Office Home & Business 2021 (Windows or Mac), or Office Professional 2021, installed by you rather than managed by work or school | All are Office 2021 editions on the Lifecycle page, retirement date "10/14/2026 6:59:59 AM" Pacific Time. At home you’ll "still be able to use it," but bug fixes, security fixes and updates end, with "no extension and no extended security updates." | Microsoft says you can keep using it. What you give up after October 13, 2026 is support, bug fixes and security fixes, so buying a replacement is a decision about that risk, not about the apps stopping. |
| Office from your work or school, or Office LTSC 2021 Standard | "contact your IT Help Desk about how to upgrade. Your IT department will likely have their own upgrade plan." The Office LTSC 2021 Lifecycle page (Standard, Standard for Mac) lists a mainstream end date of "10/14/2026 6:59:59 AM" Pacific Time. | Don’t buy a replacement yourself first. Ask IT. |
| A replacement for one computer, without a subscription | Office Home 2024 or Office Home & Business 2024 as a one-time purchase: "You can only install these versions of Office on one device," with security updates and fixes during the supported period but no new features. The Office 2024 Lifecycle page lists a retirement date of "10/10/2029 6:59:59 AM" Pacific Time. | Covers one device, with security fixes up to that Lifecycle date. |
| Desktop Office on more than one computer | Office 2024 one-time purchases install on one device. Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 subscription includes "the option to install Office across your devices." | One Office 2024 license won’t cover a second computer. Compare the subscription with one Office 2024 purchase per device; we don’t price either here. |
| Desktop Word, Excel or PowerPoint | "Microsoft 365 Basic doesn’t include the desktop apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint." | Basic is out. Check the plan’s included apps before paying. |
| An older computer or operating system | "Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for the newest version of Office." Our note: Microsoft’s requirements page (Microsoft 365 and Office resources) blocked our automated check on October 13, 2026, so we don’t list the requirements here. | UNKNOWN until you check your own device on Microsoft’s requirements page. |
| Installing the new version on the same computer | "In most cases when you run the Microsoft Office Setup program on a computer with an earlier version of Office installed, the earlier version is removed." If you uninstall first, "your Office files won’t be deleted," and Microsoft says you may want to back up Outlook data files if your version includes Outlook. | In most cases, expect the new version to replace Office 2021, not sit beside it. Back up Outlook data first if you use it. |
| Office 2019, 2016 or older | Our note: the dates on this page are for Office 2021 and the editions listed above. | Check that version’s own Lifecycle page; this table doesn’t cover it. |
If your Office came from work or school, stop at that row and ask your IT Help Desk before buying anything yourself.
FAQ
Does Office 2021 stop opening after October 13, 2026? Microsoft doesn’t say that. Its end-of-support article says your Office 2021 apps "may continue to function" and that home users will "still be able to use it." What ends is technical support, software updates and security fixes. Microsoft doesn’t guarantee how any single installation behaves after that.
Is there a free upgrade from Office 2021? Microsoft’s upgrade page doesn’t describe one for one-time purchases. It says that to upgrade, you’ll need to buy the latest version, either a Microsoft 365 subscription or the newest one-time purchase version.
Does every Microsoft 365 plan include desktop Word and Excel? No. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Basic doesn’t include the desktop apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
My Office 2021 came from my employer or school. Should I buy a replacement? Not on your own first. Microsoft says to contact your IT Help Desk about how to upgrade, and that your IT department will likely have its own upgrade plan.
