GitHub Copilot’s October Billing Change: Check Your Cycle, Not Just the Date

Scope: GitHub Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers who pay by credit card or PayPal, as described in GitHub’s changelog notice of September 3, 2026. Checked October 4, 2026 (05:32 KST); link at the end. We have not opened any billing page or account for this article, and nothing here describes your account.

GitHub’s notice says the changes "will apply to Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers paying via credit card or PayPal." Within that scope, new seats must be paid for before the user gets access. For existing customers, October 1, 2026 is the date the change applies from, not necessarily the day your card is debited: assigned seats are charged upfront at the start of your next billing cycle. Copilot Pro or Pro+, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Azure billing and invoiced contracts are outside this notice’s stated scope; whether anything similar applies to them is UNKNOWN here.

Which situation are you in?

Your situationWhat the September 3 notice saysWhen it happens
Assigning a new Business or Enterprise seat (card/PayPal)New seat assignments "will require payment for each seat before users gain Copilot access."Before that user gets access
Existing Business or Enterprise customer (card/PayPal)Assigned seats "will incur an upfront charge. This includes existing customers starting October 1, 2026."At the start of your next billing cycle on or after October 1, not necessarily on October 1
Another Copilot plan, or another payment route (Azure, invoice)Not covered by this noticeNot assessed here
Payment route not yet confirmedNot knownUNKNOWN. Don’t treat an unconfirmed route as exempt

The notice gives the charge event and the date separately: "At the start of the next billing cycle, all Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise seats assigned will incur an upfront charge." For existing card or PayPal customers, it says the updates "take effect starting October 1, 2026." If you are an existing customer in that scope, the date that matters for your account is the start of your own next billing cycle.

Timing versus amount

Besides payment before access for new seats and stronger account vetting, the notice changes when you pay, not, by its own statement, the plan price. Under "What’s not changing" it lists "Plan pricing and seat prorations for Copilot Business and Enterprise." That is the notice’s statement as of September 3, not a price we have checked against any account, and we don’t quote current seat prices here.

Two points about usage:

  • Going over. "If you exceed your included usage, additional payment may be required for you and your users to continue using Copilot." The notice also says the "Ability to purchase additional usage exceeding included allowances" is not changing.
  • Proration. "Included usage may be prorated across the month to align with the seat cost proration." How much usage your plan includes isn’t stated in the notice; check your own billing page.

FAQ

Were all existing teams charged on October 1? Not necessarily. For existing card or PayPal Business and Enterprise customers, the notice says the change applies starting October 1, 2026, and assigned seats incur the upfront charge at the start of the next billing cycle. Your charge date depends on your own cycle.

Does this apply to Azure or invoiced billing? This notice is limited to Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers "paying via credit card or PayPal". Whether anything similar applies to your contract is UNKNOWN here; check with GitHub or your account terms.

What if we cancel and come back later? The notice says "Fully canceling Copilot and returning later may trigger updated account vetting and billing behaviors." This is not a recommendation to cancel or rejoin.

Limitations

This guide is based only on GitHub’s September 3, 2026 changelog notice. We have not inspected any account, quoted a current price or included-usage amount, or confirmed any charge date, and nothing here promises savings or access. Before assigning seats, re-open the notice and check your own next billing-cycle date in GitHub.
